Canadian Marriage
Licence Requirements
Every province has different
marriage licence requirements. Most city websites
will list these requirements and the costs for the wedding
licence. The average cost is between $110 and $140.
When applying for a marriage licence
you will be required to provide original documents such as birth
certificate, passport, driver’s licence,
medical card and/or other photo identification and proof of
citizenship.
If you have been previously married you may need to provide extra
documents for proof of divorce.
The marriage licence
is issued only to the Bride and/or Groom and both parties must
sign the Marriage Licence Application.
Once you receive the marriage
llicence take it to your wedding officiant
and it will be signed by them, your witnesses (best man and maid
of honour) and yourselves on the wedding day
immediately after the wedding ceremony.
Then the person who performs the
marriage forwards the marriage licence
to the Office of the Registrar General for registration.
Then you are able to apply for a registered marriage certificate
after 8 to 10 weeks. The cost for the actual marriage
certificate is usually between $15 and $30. The bride
and groom are given the Record of Solemnization of Marriage
to keep after the wedding ceremony as proof of
marriage.
